Tips for Being an Amazingly Successful Affiliate

Affiliate Marketing as we all know is a great way to make money online. It’s stood the test of time and has proven successful for tons of website owners. While it’s a great source of income, it takes efforts. You need to put in some work to get the rewards.

The internet is filled with naysayers claiming this to be fraud, and the reason behind this is false marketing associated with an Affiliate Program. All the successful affiliates will tell you that being an affiliate does not mean that your bank account will miraculously grow. You will need to work towards it intelligently. With that being said, we’ve got the scoop on how to be an amazingly successful affiliate. We’ll help you rake in the big bucks. But mind you, this is no magic mantra. You’re going to have to do some heavy lifting. But trust us, the rewards will be more than worth it. So here you go:

  1. Traffic is King: Who is a good affiliate? The answer to this question is the one with a lot of web traffic. Being an affiliate means driving more traffic to the merchant website and getting better conversions. You can only do this if your website receives good traffic.
  1. Picking the Right Vertical: This is crucial. No one can be a good affiliate for all verticals. You have to pick out your niche. We find so many folks asking questions about which is the highest paying vertical and want to become affiliates for that. But that almost never works. The reason being, as an affiliate you make money when you can add value to the visitors to your website. If you don’t know anything about a vertical you cannot do this and hence your traffic will never truly grow. Which means no conversions and hence, no revenue.
  1. Diversify: When promoting a merchant, spread your promotions across different channels. You cannot rely on just your website in these times. You’ve got great options over and above your website which includes:
  • Online Forums
  • Review Boards
  • Social Media Networks (Facebook, Twitter)
  • LinkedIn Groups
  • Quora
  • Email (if supported by your merchant)
  1. Keep Measuring: In the end, it’s all a numbers game. Keep a close eye on your traffic and the conversion rate. Use Google Analytics to get a sense of how your traffic behaves. Measure the performance of banners on your website. Identify the locations/positions that do the best. Identify the exact banners that do better. This requires constant monitoring and measuring. Change banners that don’t perform. Drop merchants that don’t convert. Try different locations for the banners on your website. The more you measure, the better you will understand the behavior of your traffic and the better you’ll be able to monetize it.
  1. Test & Improvise: Taking cues from the point above, keep testing different banner creatives, text links and merchants till you find the perfect combo. Try adding new banners on different pages of your website. See the ones that perform best. A/B Test your website using Google Analytics to learn your traffic behavior and take necessary measures.
  1. Merchant Matters: Some merchants entice you with big commissions, don’t get blinded by it. The pros will tell you that just a big number is not the key to financial success in this business. A better converting merchant is way better than the ones that promise to pay more. Let us explain this with an example:

Merchant A pays Rs.1000 per sale

Merchant B pays Rs.500 per sale.

The traffic coming to your site prefers the products/quality provided by Merchant B so they convert better with Merchant B. So if Merchant B gets 10 conversions a month and Merchant A gets only 2 conversions, you will make more money via Merchant B despite the lower commission rate.

  1. Add Value to the customer: This is what it all comes down to. This is the most important piece of advice we can offer. Your website should have content that can add value to your visitors. This will allow you to grow your traffic and monetize it better. If the information you provide is copied from other sites, your visitors will drop your site sooner or later. Not to mention Google will punish you big time for this. You SEO rank will take a massive hit. So organic traffic will be almost non-existent for you.
  1. Don’t Overkill: Banners are great but no one likes a site with too many of them. Keep them to a minimum and let your content do the talking. A site with more ads than content looks spammy and will never generate decent revenue.
  1. Leverage Your Network: All of us have a network; you should always leverage that to the fullest. Send email notifications to them about merchant offers, updates via Facebook/Twitter and so on. The larger the network, the better it gets.

These have been our learning over past so many years in the business. We’ve seen affiliates rise and all of them had these points in common. We’re sure you can do it with the right guidance and we hope to have been able to help a little with this. As usual, drop your comments and let us know your experience.
